Young and Hungry

P1010262 (Custom)The Red-winged Blackbird nest at the edge of the paved path (see yesterday’s post) now has two hatchlings. They both appeared alive and very hungry.  I fear for them, as park staff’s mowing machine has cut down all but a few inches of the fennel buffer between the nest and the paved path.  Will the parents find enough time when people aren’t there to take good care of their brood? The park is pretty busy over Memorial Day, and the blackbirds don’t like to be closer than about ten feet to human visitors.  Ideally the path should be closed until the birds can fly, but getting park management to do anything in the park besides mow and pick up trash is a long shot.
