This female Red-winged Blackbird caught a grasshopper, and like her sister who posed for portraits last week, she was up on the fennel tops this morning letting the world see her prize. It’s unusual to see females up top; that’s normally the realm of the red-shouldered males. There must be some kind of blackbird village custom for females with a prize catch to take the high stage and show it off. Like her sister of last week, this female flitted from one high branch to another and turned this way and that, making sure that the whole blackbird neighborhood had a chance to see what a good hunter and provider she is.
