Responding to more than a year of citizen complaints about the stinky porta-potties in Cesar Chavez Park, the Marina administration last week put lipstick on the pig. Instead of replacing the costly, disgusting, high-maintenance porta-potties with economical and sanitary flush-vault bathrooms, the management had carpenters build a three-sided lattice screen to hide the back and sides of the plastic abominations from the road and from guests at the Hilton hotel. They also had the porta-potty supplier replace the blue-green units with a pair of gray units pulled from another site. One of the replacement units shows decades of rust on its inner rail used by the disabled. The smaller unit looks to have a leak, as the floor is wet even in late afternoon.
This cosmetic maneuver demonstrates again that the city government has nothing but contempt for Chavez Park park visitors. In their eyes, it’s still the city dump. The city council majority vote huge tax breaks for luxury developers, but they whine “no money, no money” when it comes to providing decent sanitary facilities for the city’s largest park. Shame!
